A steel mill has been fined $21,000 for serious safety violations in a fire at its Fort Wayne, Indiana steel plant.
An explosion at a steel plant in northwest Indiana injured workers and sparked a fire that sent smoke pouring into an industrial complex near Lake Michigan. Videos from the scene showed the explosion dumping large pieces of burning shrapnel into the mill, and officials said it sparked the fire and caused the destruction of equipment in a blast furnace. No one was injured in the explosion, which occurred at the D blast furnace plant in Indiana, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. An Indiana Steel plant released toxic chemicals into the air, killed fish and paralyzed parts of the Indiana Dunes on Wednesday, but no workers were hurt and no fire was ignited.
ArcelorMittal spokesman William Steers said no one was injured and the fire was contained and extinguished, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and Indiana Dunes Harbor Authority.
